Have you ever seen a home with a straight sidewalk and 10 solar path lights running the length of the sidewalk? Each light in a perfect row?
I often get clients who say that they want light on their walkways, but don’t want it to look like an airport runway. Here’s some path light tips:
First, path lights are very useful in creating safety around walkways, sidewalks, stairs and trails. Uneven stones, concrete and roots all pose trip hazards. The trick is where and how to position the lights.
I always like to start at the ends of the walkway, then move toward the middle. First, have a light near the steps so that visitors can see the first and last step. Next be sure the beginning of the walkway has a light to mark the entrance of the walkway or path. Then do the same with the end.
Finally, fill in the remaining walkway with strategically placed lights. By strategically, I mean don’t line up the lights in a straight row. Stagger the fixtures and spacing. Keep them away from bushes. Create bubbles of light areas and shade or even a zig-zag pattern on the pathway. It is not necessary to have uniform lighting on a pathway.
